The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) founded in the year 1977, has been entrusted with the important task of recruitment of both Technical and Non-Technical (Group B and C) posts in all the Offices of Central Government. SSC functions under the Department of Personnel & Training, Govt. of India. Initially SSC was known as Subordinate Services Commission set up in the year 1976 in order to make recruitment for non-technical (Group C) posts under the Central Government on Zonal basis.
The Staff Selection Commission conducts the Departmental Examinations for the promotion from Lower Division Clerk (LDC) to Upper Division Clerk (UDC) and Group D to LDC Grade as well as D grade Stenographers to C Grade other than holding Periodical Typewriting Tests in Hindi and English language.
SSC has a nationwide network of 9 Regional or Sub-Regional Offices situated at the four metropolitan cities as well as in Guwahati, Bangalore, Kolkata, Allahabad and Sub-Regional offices located at Chandigarh & Raipur. These Offices are responsible for smooth conduct of its recruitment, receipt & processing of applications for various examinations, conducting the Interviews/PETs and issuing admission certificates to the candidates either at the Regional Headquarters or within the regions of major cities. Regional Directors and Deputy Directors head the Regional Offices of the Commission and the Sub Regional Offices.
Implementing the policies & programmes of the Commission, establishing rapport with State Governments and their Departments, assist the Interview Boards, servicing the Centres of examination within their jurisdiction, supervising and overseeing its field operations, making arrangements for fair and smooth conduct of examinations are some of the major responsibilities of SSC.
SSC recruits for the lower grade posts in the various governmental offices, divisional accountants, auditors of graduate level, upper division clerks, junior accountants, inspectors of income tax or central excise etc and various other posts of the Govt. of India.

A. General Intelligence & Reasoning:
Analytical aptitude and ability to observe and distinguish patterns will be tested through questions principally of non-verbal type. This component may include questions on analogies, similarities and differences, spatial visualization, spatial orientation, visual memory, discrimination, observation, relationship concepts, arithmetical reasoning and figural classification, arithmetic number series, non-verbal series, coding and decoding, etc.
B. General Knowledge and General Awareness:
Questions in this component will be aimed at testing the candidates general awareness of the environment around him. Questions will also be designed to test knowledge of current events and of such matters of every day observations and experience in their scientific aspect as may be expected of any educated person. The test will also include questions relating to India and its neighboring countries especially pertaining to sports, History, Culture, Geography, Economic Scene, General Polity, Indian Constitution, scientific Research etc. These Questions will be such that they do not require a special study of any discipline.
C. Elementary Mathematics:
This paper will include questions on problems relating to Number Systems, Computation of Whole Numbers, Decimals and Fractions and relationship between Numbers, Fundamental arithmetical operations, Percentages, Ratio and Proportion, Averages, Interest, Profit and Loss, Discount, Mensuration, Time and Distance, Ratio and Time, Time and Work, etc.
D. English/Hindi :
Candidates’ ability to understand basic English/ Hindi, his basic comprehension would be tested.
